Signaling pathway

A signaling pathway is a series of events on and within a cell that conveys information and leads to a specific function or response. Signaling pathways are initiated by a ligand (e.g., hormones), and typically include proteins and enzymes throughout the cell.

Proteomics and metabolomics are important methods of identifying changes in signaling pathways, as they measure key molecules that are responsible for the pathways and functions they perform. Various signaling pathways have been shown to be abnormal in ME/CFS.

OMF’s Collaborative Center at Stanford University is investigating one such signaling pathway: the tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) pathway. Read more about the study here.
