TCA cycle

The citric acid cycle (TCA cycle) is a series of chemical reactions that occur in the mitochondria, with the primary purpose of producing energy.

There is growing evidence that the TCA cycle in people with ME/CFS doesn’t function correctly. Some indications of that are reduced energy (ATP) production and higher lactate levels.

At OMF’s Collaborative Center at Stanford University, Dr. Ron Davis’ team is investigating alterations to the TCA cycle in people with ME/CFS, specifically a hypothesis called the itaconate shunt. Read more about this work here.
